If you are visiting Hiroshima soon, its surrounding cities are worth checking out too, even just for a day. In this guide, we highlighted the best day trips from Hiroshima.

When visiting Hiroshima, most tourists seek to understand and reflect on its tragic past as the site of the first atomic bomb attack in 1945. The city has transformed this devastating history into a powerful message of peace and a testament to human resilience.

If you have more time, we suggest going beyond the city and exploring nearby places. From the stunning landscapes of Miyajima to Fukuyama’s unique blend of culture and nature, you have more to enjoy while in Hiroshima.

1. Miyajima

Officially known as Itsukushima, Miyajima Island is one of Japan's most iconic and breathtaking destinations, often lauded as one of the "Three Great Views of Japan." It offers a cool mix of spiritual significance, natural landscapes, and cultural experiences that make it an unforgettable visit.

The Great Torii Gate and Itsukushima Shrine are popular tourist spots. Its Omotesando Shopping Street is also known for shopping and dining. And of course, chow down on its well-loved momiji manju, oysters, and anago meshi.

2. Takehara

Often called "Little Kyoto of Aki," Takehara is a charming city that boasts a serene and authentic glimpse into traditional Japan. It's the ideal destination for those seeking to escape the crowds of larger cities and immerse themselves in history, culture, and nature.

Head over to Saihoji Temple and Fumeikaku to get a glimpse of the Seto Inland Sea. One of the most popular sites in Takehara is Okunoshima or Rabbit Island, where hundreds of wild rabbits live.

3. Onomichi

A photogenic port town in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture, Onomichi is known for its mix of historical charm and artistic flair. It’s also a gateway to one of Japan's most famous cycling routes. It's a fantastic destination for those who enjoy a slower pace, scenic views, and a touch of quirky charm.

Its most iconic attraction is the hillside temples, which can be seen through the Onomichi Temple Walk. The highlight? The Senkoji Temple and the Senkoji Park which are located on top of Mount Senkoji.

4. Kure

Found southeast of Hiroshima City, Kure is a city deeply intertwined with Japan's modern industrial and naval history. While perhaps not as widely known as Hiroshima for its peace message, Kure offers a fascinating insight into a different, yet equally significant, aspect of Japanese history and culture.

When in Kure, visit Yamato Museum and Iron Whale Museum to get a glimpse of the city’s past. Make sure to try their Kure navy curry, nikujaga, and kure-yaki (okonomiyaki).

5. Fukuyama

Situated in the eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, Fukuyama offers a captivating blend of history, natural beauty, and unique cultural experiences, making it a worthwhile stop for visitors to Japan.

Fukuyama Castle is its most prominent landmark, so be sure to check it out. Other important landmarks include Miyagawa-suji, Myoo-in Temple, and Nunakuma Shrine.
