While it is chilly, winter in Hiroshima offers unique experiences, cultural events, fewer crowds, and a famous culinary highlight that makes the cold entirely worthwhile.
Hiroshima is often busiest during the cherry blossom (spring) and autumn foliage seasons. In winter, especially after the New Year's period (early January), crowds thin out significantly.
However, winter is the single biggest reason for food lovers to visit Hiroshima around this time. Hiroshima Prefecture is the largest producer of oysters in Japan, and winter (roughly December to March) is the prime season for these fresh, plump delicacies.

The weather is cold but generally manageable. Daytime highs hover around 5-10 degrees Celsius, dropping close to freezing at night.
Light snow is possible in the city, but it rarely accumulates. Expect to wear heavy layers, a warm coat, a hat, and gloves.

Hiroshima Winter 2025-2026: Where to Stay

The best area to stay in Hiroshima during the winter depends on your priorities, but generally, staying near a major transportation hub or the city center is best to minimize walking in the cold.
Staying around Hiroshima Station is perfect for winter travel as you have direct and covered access to trains, Shinkansen (bullet trains), and the local streetcar/bus network, minimizing your time outdoors.
You get excellent transit links, easy for day trips, plenty of shops and restaurants inside the station complex.
Meanwhile, Hondori Street is centrally located, putting you close to the main sights, shopping, and nightlife. You can easily walk or take the streetcar to the Peace Memorial Park and Museum.
Hiroshima Winter 2025-2026: What to Eat

Oyster Festivals
Look out for local Oyster Festivals held across the prefecture, often in late January or February, where you can sample various preparations.
Other Warm Foods
It's also the perfect time to enjoy hot pot dishes like Monkfish Hot Pot and the regional favorite, Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki, served sizzling hot on the teppan (hot plate).
