There’s no point in visiting Japan if you won’t try the udon here.

Sure, you may have tried udon countless times either in your favorite Japanese restaurants in your country, or in your local convenience stores like 7-Eleven, but nothing will ever beat the udon experience in this East Asian nation, especially in majestic Hiroshima, right?

Udon is a noodle dish, yet don’t worry since it isn’t a bowl of spicy noodles just like your staple Korean faves. This Japanese craving is a thick, wheat flour-based noodle dish famous in this nation – not usually served cold like your cold yakisoba – served fresh and hot in a broth of dashi.

However, if you insist and want this cold, though not common, be sure to pair your bowl with the dipping sauce.

Here is where to find the best udon in Hiroshima!

1. Taiko Udon Nakamachi

Starting at just 1,000 yen, you can experience the best of this Japanese noodle dish in Hiroshima. At Taiko Udon Nakamachi, customers point out how they also offer vegetarian options on their menu. Others reviewed how they serve all kinds of udon, such as shrimp and mochi udon. The latter sounds odd, but worth giving a try.

2. Ina Chuu

Yes, you are reading that name of the restaurant accurately. For others, they might laugh at how it sounds, but why judge a book by its cover, right? This is also a budget-friendly eatery that won’t just serve udon, but also seafood dishes. However, reaching this diner is somewhat unusual, since you’d have to take a ferry from Miyajimaguchi, disembark at Miyajima Pier, then walk for five minutes. But, guaranteed, your efforts will pay off.

3. Musubi Musashi

Interestingly, udon is not a dish that will easily hurt your pocket. The fact you can have them at your preferred convenience store, isn’t it? Meanwhile, here at this restaurant, you can pair your sumptuous udon with several other food choices, such as bento meals. It is also located within a mall building, so you can relax and dine after a tiring shopping time.

As you go lose yourself amidst Hiroshima, there’s no way you cannot stumble upon this restaurant. Many diners spot this place by chance and they never regret it. One of the most recommended udon dishes here is that with egg and crab that comes as a set meal with rice and broth. Perfect for a winter trip in Hiroshima.

5. Nokiya

Don’t hesitate dropping by this restaurant just since it sounds like a defunct mobile phone brand. You’ll be proud when you’ve tasted their dishes. Before you even walk in, you can see the udon’s dough the cooks are preparing from the outside, just like several Chinese noodle restaurants. In particular, their udon menu is divided into udon noodles in hot broth, tempura udon, bukkake udon, and Tosa soy sauce udon. Irresistible.

7. Marugame Seimen Iwakuni

Now that name should sound more familiar to you. This restaurant will remind you of the globally renowned udon restaurant that carries almost the same name, and the system of ordering is quite similar, too! So, you order your udon noodle dish, pick your toppings, settle your payment, then indulge. Slurp, slurp, slurp. Wait until you hear about the prices. There’s a reason why Yelp features this as one of the most recommended udon restaurants in Hiroshima and around.

While udon is most famous in the Kagawa Prefecture, where the term “Marugame Udon” came from, this doesn’t mean that Hiroshima won’t have something to show off when talking about this Japanese dish. In fact, the tastiest seafood udon are in this area.

From promoting digestion to supporting weight management, udon’s health benefits are plenty, which is why workers enjoy this dish after their shift and these restaurants are also the ideal hangout spots with friends for a gastronomic experience that isn’t as heavy on the tummy as ramen.
