Iwakuni is best known as a historic castle city in southeastern Yamaguchi Prefecture.
This city is also the location of a US Marine Corps air station.
Just an hour train ride away from Hiroshima, Iwakuni can be explored on a day trip.
If you are planning to explore the city a bit more, make sure to visit the Kintaikyo Bridge, the iconic landmark that represents the city, as well as the Iwakuni Castle.
In terms of food, it’s best known for Iwakunizushi, which is a colorful, multi-layered variation of oshi-zushi (pressed sushi).

1. Kobe beef yakiniku at Kinjiro
A yakiniku or grilled meat restaurant that specializes in Kobe beef is Kinjiro.
Kobe beef is a special kind of Wagyu beef made from purebred Tajima cattle raised in the Hyōgo Prefecture of Japan.
It’s all over Japan. But in Iwakuni, you can try Kinjiro.
Kobe beef may be the center of attention at Kinjiro, but you can also find other offerings on the menu that will satisfy your taste.

2. Cajun cuisine at Gator's Cajun Kitchen
Cajun cuisine might not be the first thing that comes to mind when in Japan.
But Gator’s Cajun Kitchen is hard to pass up when you happen to be in Iwakuni.
This Cajun restaurant serves all of your favorite dishes, from jambalaya to gumbo to étouffée.
They also serve an array of other Western dishes, such as buffalo wings, fries, salads, pickles, and more!

3. Sanzoku-yaki chicken and musubi rice at Irori Sanzoku
If you are feeling a bit adventurous, this Japanese restaurant, located in Nishiki, which is a bit far from downtown Iwakuni, is worth the trip.
It’s best known for its delicious Sanzoku-yaki chicken and large Sanzoku musubi rice balls.
They have all sorts of Japanese staples, so be sure to check the menu!
The festive atmosphere of the restaurant is a huge part of the experience, making it even more worth visiting.

4. Oysters at Montonine
Oyster bars are plenty, but this one’s a bit underrated.
Fresh oysters, fried oysters, ceviche oysters—you name it.
Montonine is a pretty well-loved restaurant in the community for its good service and best-tasting food.
No matter how you like it, your oysters are best paired with lemon sour.
