10 Must-Try Hiroshima Delicacies

Not just a culture and history haven, Hiroshima is a foodie wonderland, and that’s one thing we love about it.


If you are heading to Hiroshima and thinking about what local delicacies you should try, we’ve come up with a list for you.


Hiroshima has a bunch of local delicacies unique to the region.


Most of them are based on fresh seafood since this is one of the main seafood producers in the region.


Oysters, in particular, are quite popular.


Grilled, buttered, fried—you name it.


Hiroshima is also known for its distinctive take on Japanese classics, such as tsukemen.


And of course, Hiroshima’s okonomiyaki, which is one of the most common styles of the dish we see in Japan today.


1. Momiji Manju


This maple-leaf-shaped cake is a Japanese classic.


It’s usually filled with red bean paste.


However, you can now find it in all sorts of flavors such as cheese, chocolate, and custard.



2. Hiroshima Oysters


Oysters are popular, particularly in Miyajima Island.


They are big, rich, and briny, and you can have it raw, grilled, or in hot pots.


But for a true local experience, you should have it in a set meal of rice, miso soup and deep-fried oysters served with tartar sauce.



3. Hiroshima Tsukemen


Although created in Tokyo in 1961, tsukemen or dipping ramen noodles is made of cold, noodles dipped into a separate bowl of soup.



4. Hiroshima Okonomiyaki


This savory pancake comes in two styles—Hiroshima-style and Kansai-style (Kyoto/Osaka).


Hiroshima’s okonomiyaki is layered with batter, pork, cabbage, eggs, and yakisoba noodles, which makes it different.


Okonomiyaki dates back to the Edo period and has gotten popular due to its “grilled to one’s liking” idea.



5. Anago Meshi


Anago, or eel, is something you will find in Hiroshima commonly.


Just go inside a restaurant and find it.


You can have it grilled, simmered, or in sushi, served over soy-flavored rice, a specialty of the Miyajima area.



6. Kawadori Mochi

If you are looking for something to bring as a souvenir or gift to your family and friends back home, go grab some kawadori mochi.


These are a traditional, chewy sweet rice cake filled with walnuts.



7. Onomichi Ramen


You may be familiar with a wide variety of ramen.


One that’s popular in Hiroshima is the Onomichi ramen.


Named after the the city it comes from, this type of ramen is a soy-based broth with soy sauce, seafood dashi, and pork back fat.



8. Lemon Specialties

Hiroshima is the top source of lemon in Japan.


It only makes to find a bunch of lemon and lemon-flavored delicacies.


Whether it’s in the form of beverage or sweets, you will find them almost everywhere—convenience store, restaurants, and food stalls.
