Miyajima Island in beautiful Hiroshima is a destination that will let go of your doubts and why’s regarding what majestic, secluded, and seafood-rich Japanese islands should be. Accessible via either ferries or trains from the Hiroshima city center, this place is beyond just the hypnotic torii gate that’s been the star in popular animes, such as “The Elusive Samurai,” which highlighted the Kamakura times in Japan, coinciding with the Middle Ages in Europe.

1. Miyajima Oyster Festival 

Being a seafood paradise for those with a flair for food, Hiroshima has always been the gem of southwestern Japan. You know there are lots of good restaurants in this historic city, so why don’t you take it further and attend the Oyster Festival on pretty Miyajima? Expect the impossible. 


2. Setsubun Festival

Find time to make your presence at the Setsubun Festival in the mesmerizing city of Hiroshima, where it’s on you if you forget what breakfast to prepare for your kids the next day. This is since it’s throwing beans here, just like throwing water at the Songkran big fest, or playing with tomatoes in Spain.



3. Tamatori-sai

Take your soles to the Itsukushima Shrine for a festival that requires parental guidance if you have kids in tow. This festival, referred to as Tamatori-sai, started from the 15th century, the Age of Warring States, whilst it’s the period of rebirth in Italy. 


Images from travel bloggers show partially clad men in white fabrics climbing what seems to be poles, trying to grab a treasure ball. So, it’s basically like watching this event as spectators.  



4. Sea Kayaking

If the previous festival seems too superficially out of this world for you, be adequately courageous enough to try the popular activity that is kayaking on the waters of Miyajima Island. The tides on this island are strong enough to cause you to exert more force when paddling your kayak. What’s a prick of travel detours when you can turn this activity into your own? 5. Miyajima Dance Night

Again, you don’t need to be a professional dancer to be admitted to this spectacle. When you’re staying on the island for several weeks, this event is held a few days after the memorable Obon Festival. 


Conducted on the island’s Mikasahama Beach, the beauty of the place and the thrill of the show meet here. Find your spot in the audience area to watch the performers interpret how souls depart the living world to mingle in the afterlife. 


6. Kangen-sai

You read that right. This is the name of this event, also a must-see on Miyajima Island. Described to be elaborate, it also started at the height of the Heian era in Japan. However, when you wish to attend this feast, you will have to follow a particular schedule so you don’t miss any moment. Imagine Japanese musical instruments you hear while watching the scenery over the Hiroshima shoreline.



7. Chinka-sai

Should you find time sneaking out of your island hotel room after your New Year’s Eve preparation and dinner, you could find yourself taking part in the Chinka-sai feast. But, don’t be surprised if this event is to honor the fire prevention campaigns in Japan. Fun, but never too conspicuous. 


8. Great Benzaiten Festival of Itsukushima

Held during the wedding season, it’s the Daiganji Temple as the star venue here. This event honors one of the three great Benzaiten gods in Japan. Talk about Oriental history, such deities are Lucky Gods, or Japanese magical creatures associated with music, eloquence, and good fortune. It is one of the most ornate festivals held in this East Asian country.



9. Kiyomori Festival

Last, but certainly never to be shoved off on your list of must-attend events, is the Kiyomori Festival. Unless there’s a dress code you must follow on your scheduled appearance, think of shining while watching the parade of the locals, likewise clad in traditional attire. In other words, consider wearing your kimono as you drive yourself mad while at this event. Be prepared to flash your Apple smartphone.
